Chapter 14

As Connor and Liam sat on the porch of Liam’s old house, they heard a car making its way up the driveway.

“I wonder who that could be,” Liam said, for a second forgetting that he was the visitor in his own house.

“Well, if you are my dad, it’s someone you are going to be excited to see.” Connor replied.

Liam felt strange in this moment. He had lived at this house on and off for forty years and the idea of someone coming up the driveway should have been easy for him to blow off as routine, but he could feel the excitement building in his chest, the butterflies in his stomach, the anticipation of who it might be. This was the third time he had felt this feeling since his resurrection, and he had not quite gotten used to it. He couldn’t help but think it could be Autumn, but everything in his heart told him it wasn’t.

Without hesitation, Liam threw open the sliding door and marched through the house toward the front door. Connor, on the other hand, slowly trailed behind him. As Connor watched Liam move throughout the house with ease, he felt a sense of remorse. The man who he was continually doubting to be his father was moving through a house as if he’d lived there his whole life. For the first time he thought this may be his father.

Liam was now sitting on the front porch watching as an old man slowly exited the car.

“Who is this?”

“It’s the attorney general.”

Liam turned back to look at Connor, “Why would the attorney want to see me?”

Connor smiled and with his eyes and a gentle nod and told Liam to focus his attention on the man coming toward him.

The man’s dress was slightly disheveled, but the attire was much nicer than what he had seen prior. His hair was gray and his figure was slender. He reminded Liam of his grandfather, a man who lived well into his nineties. A man who remained in great shape his whole life until pneumonia quickly took him from this earth at the age of ninety-six.

The man in the car was now turning around, and Liam realized that he had no idea who he could be. The two of them made eye contact and neither said a word. The vehicle that was behind the old man was now backing away. Liam looked away from the old man for a moment to watch the car leave on its own, a sight he still found amazing. The old man, on the other hand, did not break his stare. He, unlike Liam, was very used to the sight of a car driving itself. What he was not used to seeing was a man who he once placed in a tomb now standing on a deck he helped him build more than seventy-five years ago.

“Is that you, Liam?” the old man asked. On the car ride over the old man had prepared several witty remarks based upon his first observations of Liam, but they all fell apart once he laid eyes on him.
